I Used To Love Her-Part 3: The Day After

“What would you like for breakfast David?”

“Honestly, I’m trying to figure out what happened last night Karen. What did we do?”

“Well, I shouldn’t have to explain what we did last night. You woke up naked and in my bed and I was naked when you woke up right? I didn’t have sex by myself.”

David was desperately trying to remember what happened the night before, but he had no recollection of the events. All he knew is what Karen told him and that meant he had went somewhere with her he did not plan on going. Now he had to handle the repercussions.

“So what’s next for us David? We have taken things to the next level now.”

“Karen, let me gather my thoughts please. I’m still trying to figure out how I even got back to your house.”

Karen didn’t like the answer she received from David, but instead of blowing up on David, she played it cool.

“I can respect that answer. I know you have gone through a lot in the last couple weeks. Just know that I will be there for you.”

Karen fixed David breakfast while trying to figure out in her mind what else she had to do to get him to love her the way he loved Marley.

While Karen was trying to figure out what she could do be David’s main squeeze, Allen was trying to get himself together after a long night. It had been a minute since he had drunk like that and he was paying for it this morning. He awoke laid on his couch, still fully clothed from the night before. As he began to move around, he took a look at his watch and noticed the time said 8:15 am. Allen immediately jumped up and began scrambling to get ready for his day. He had to be at work at 9am and if he was late one more time, that could mean his job.

Allen was able to get a quick shower and rush in to work. As he opened the door to his office and walked in, the time was 8:59 AM, just in time for him to not be late, or so he thought. As he began to clock in at his customer service desk, his boss Ted came over and pulled him to the side.

“Allen, you have consistently been late over your time here with us at Barkley Services. I’ve done as much as I can for you in trying to stress to you the importance of being here on time. Even though you got here before 9 AM, you needed to be clocked in at 9. As a result, we have to let you go. At this point in time, we need you to clean out your desk, turn in your badge and exit the premises.”

Allen was floored by the speech he got. Ted, who Allen knew from college, had given him this opportunity and after some screwups early, he felt he was doing better the last few weeks.

“But I was here on time today. In the building before nine Ted. I was doing better. Can you pleases reconsider? I was doing better for you Ted. I know you can see that.”

“Allen, your time is up here. I tried to help you out here, but this just isn’t going to work out. Have a nice life. We may have been college classmates, but I’m not throwing away my career for you.”

At that point, Allen knew there was nothing else that could be said. Allen went back to his desk, packed up his things, said his goodbyes to his co-workers and exited the building after turning in his badge. Here he was again, jobless and scrambling to rebound again.

Allen, unlike Karen, Marlon and David, had troubles after college. The troubles started with his drinking. Although he did not consider himself an alcoholic, his drinking had cost him multiple jobs, multiple relationships and had him living in a barely-livable apartment. What was even more amazing about his troubles is he hid them very well from his closest friends.  None of his friends ever visited his apartment, he always had reasons for not being in the relationships that he ruined and he always had some excuse why he was unemployed for the times he did not have a job. Allen was creative at coming up with reasons for things instead of accepting the responsibility of his choices. The reality of Allen was that he was a functional alcoholic and he hid it very well in plain sight.  So without a job again, he had to figure out how to make endsmeat and survive.

Allen was headed back home when he got a call from Karen, who had just let David out the door about an hour ago.

“How did you enjoy yourself last night?”

“I enjoyed myself a lot Karen. Didn’t remember much of what happened but I made it home.”

“Well, I know you had a good time last night. I also know you had a rough morning.”

“What are you talking about Karen?”

“You must have forgot I used to date Ted in college and he still wants me Allen. I know you were on thin ice at your job and got fired. In fact, I know your whole story Allen. You may think I didn’t know, but I do. So I need you to do a little something for me and I will give you some money to keep yourself afloat.”

Allen listened intently as Karen gave instructions with the end payoff being money for Allen to sustain himself.

Meanwhile, David had been at work for a while and still could believe what he woke up to. He knew it was going to be awkward from here on out between he and Karen and that he had to find a way to get out as soon as possible. David reached out to Marlon to see if he could help him, but Marlon turned David down. He reached out to Allen as well and got the same result. So it was back to Karen’s house tonight unless she wanted to pay for a hotel. And with him trying to get himself back together still, spending money on a hotel is the last thing he wanted to do.

So with limited options, David was getting ready to hop in his 325i to head to Karen’s home when out of nowhere, a gun was placed to David’s head.

“I need you to give me all your wallet, cellphone, and your keys right now!” said the robber, who appeared in all-black from head to toe with a mask.

David was shook immediately and complied with what the robber asked him. David stepped away from the vehicle and watched as this masked man drove off in his vehicle. David went back in his office building and immediately contacted the police. After they arrived on the scene and he gave them a statement, he then used the office phone to call a ride home. Marlon didn’t answer when he called him and neither did Allen, so his last resort was speaking with Karen to go back to her home.

“Karen, can you come pick me up? I got robbed today at work. The robber took my wallet, my cellphone and my car.”

“I’ll be there as fast as I can. Are you ok?’

I’m fine Karen. Just please come get me.”

Karen arrived at David’s job in about 30 minutes to get him and then they headed back to Karen’s house.

“Thanks for coming to pick me up Karen. I appreciate it.”

It’s the least I can do for the man who rocked my world last night.”

David gave an awkward smile to Karen as he heard those words. Eventually he was going to address the situation, but with him not having a wallet, cellphone and car, he was going to have to stake it out for a little while until he got things together.

“I can take you to work tomorrow or wherever you need to go David.”

“Okay. Thanks Karen.”

They finally arrived at Karen’s apartment and David immediately went to the shower.

“I have to wash the mess that happened this afternoon off me Karen.”

Once David closed the door and Karen heard the shower turn on the shower curtain close, Karen got on the phone and called Allen.

“Great job today Allen. I will text you where to take the vehicle and please ditch the cellphone. Your payment will happen once everything has been completed.”

Allen felt bad for what he did to his friend, but he needed the money. As soon as he hung up the phone, Allen peeled off into the night with the red 325i while tossing the David’s cellphone and wallet out the window.
